Thessaloniki City Tour, Kavala, Phillippi
A short morning tour features Thessaloniki, the gateway for Christianity’s spread to the rest of Europe. Begin in Aristotelous
Square, the main square of the city, with important landmarks of different periods.
A visit is then planned to the church of St.Demetrius, the patron saint of the city, where you will see one of the first Basilicas, the 5th c. Church of Acheiropoietos. Other places of interest to be seen include the 7th c. Church of St. Sophia, the 300 AD Arch of Galerius and the 15th c. White Tower, one of the most iconic monuments of the city.
Departing Thessaloniki west along the Aegean coastline you arrive in Kavala, former know as Neapoli, where Paul first landed in Europe. It is then but a short ride to visit the archaeological site of Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul and Silas were in Philippi where they were arrested, flogged, and imprisoned for causing a public nuisance. Yet Paul retained a special affection for the Philippians, his first converts, and the congregation that he established was one of the earliest to flourish in Greece. End the day with your return to Thessaloniki where dinner will be served.
Vergina, Beria, Kalambaka
Depart Thessaloniki this morning, and head to the archaeological site of Vergina in Central Macedonia. Considered one the most
extraordinary finds of the 20th century,
Vergina was the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia.
Visit the Royal Tomb of King Phillip (father of Alexander the Great) and view the famous "Vergina Treasures" including gold urns, jeweled wreaths,
unique art, ivory, and armor. It is then but a short drive to Beria (which is modern day Veria), Acts 17:11, “...they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” The Bereans were famous because they didn’t just take Paul at his word, but they listened to Paul’s preaching of the gospel of Jesus, and then looked to their Scriptures (at that point, it would have been the Old Testament) to see if what Paul was preaching was true.
A wonderful day concludes with
your arrival at your hotel in Kalambaka where following check-in, dinner awaits.
Meteora Monasteries, Delphi
Today an exciting visit is planned to Meteora.
Meaning "suspended in the air", Meteora is the remarkable Eastern Orthodox monasteries incredibly situated close to the edge of massive rock formations. These monasteries were once a safe haven for monks fleeing the fall of the Roman Empire.
Your day continues as you depart south via the scenic towns of Amphissa, Lamia and Trikala
on route to Athens. The drive takes you past Thermopylae where you will learn of the famous Spartan battle of 300. A late afternoon arrival is Delphi, home of the ruins of the Tholos Temple.
*Please note dress code. In Meteora, women are required to wear skirts below the knee and men, pants.
Archaeological Tour of Delphi, Travel to Athens
Touring today begins at the excavated site of Delphi and the archaeological museum, perched on the slopes of Mount Parnassos, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Considered one of the most significant places in Greek history, its stunning setting and
ancient ruins are truly inspirational. Walk the Sacred Way to the imposing 4th century B.C. Temple of Apollo, site of the most important oracle in the classical world.
